Careful research
has gone into the casting, inscriptions and carriages of the newly
cast fieldpieces, howitzers and mortars. Several cast bronze weapons
have been completed including an eight-inch bronze howitzer and
carriage (above), placed in the fascine cannon battery. The other
artillery piece in the battery is a light brass six pounder; a
fieldpiece which fired round shot, grape or canister, and is mounted
on carriages with large wheels. Howitzers and mortars fired exploding
shells. Coehorn mortars, an eight-inch mortar, a pack howitzer
and two six pounders on garrison carriages can be seen in the
lower battery. A hoisting device, or triangle gin, located nearby,
was used to lift these cannon barrels weighing more than six hundred
pounds.
